We continue to buy our Atlantic Salmon from Canada due to over antibiotic use in Chile. There has been controversy in the news about major retailers (Costco) switching from Chilean Farmed Salmon to Norwegian Salmon because of the over use of antibiotics. Not only do we buy Canadian Salmon for a smaller carbon footprint and excellent quality/taste, but apparently if you buy Chilean Salmon, you need not go to your doctor anymore for antibiotics because your Atlantic Salmon consumption will have you covered.
Oysters, clams and mussels are in good supply and prices are the same.
There are more fish shoing up to the auction weekly, and some bargains, like Escolar and Mongchong, remain. Our buyers at the Honolulu Auction, give us daily pricing, buy as directed, box and ship same day. There are still plenty of fish available. Please check with your sales rep for availability.
Seafood sustainability is a journey that includes many stakeholders including conservation groups, fishermen, fish farmers, wholesalers, distributors, and industry groups all working together to address issues. We are committed to educating and moving Northstar Seafoods, Inc., its vendors and customers towards offering more sustainable options, increasing community understanding on environmental responsibility and being an agent of change in the seafood industry.
Northstar Seafoods, Inc. recognizes that there are current standards in the seafood industry that have been developed to certify products as sustainable, such as the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). While we do consider the MSC and GAA (Global Aquaculture Alliance) standards favorably in our sourcing decisions, however, we do not require all of our products to be certified “sustainable”. We do seek to ensure that the products we sell meet certain benchmarks for food safety, quality and sustainability as outlined above.
